Its here and now that matters, yet important episodes occured in the past that brought us to here. I used to say that the first birthday was the most important, because you cant miss the first one, but you can skip all the rest.
I guess with my own birthday , this is how i feel, some people like to celebrate for the vanity or indugence of the self. But other people just like to keep going and not look back.
